The Story
United Airlines is in the process of taking delivery of 100 Aircrafts/year for the next 5 years. Terminal B at IAH Houston comprising Terminal B North, Terminal B South & the processor, must be redesigned and rebuilt with a very aggressive schedule and budget. F S Group Architects’ scope included the redesign of a new Terminal B South Concourse for 25 Gates, Ramp Level on Airside for support & Mezzanine Level for United Club and Staff Offices comprising the redesign of a total of 206,782sf on three levels.
Design Narrative
The primary task for this project was to demolish the Terminal B Processor, North Concourse, and South Concourse. F S Group Architects oversaw the Terminal B South Redevelopment. Our approach was to maximize the number of Aircraft Gates in the Concourse based on the maneuvering room available on the ramp for the newly acquired aircrafts by United Airlines. Secondly, the baggage handling system and the mechanical areas were moved below to the ramp level to provide clear sightlines and access from processor to the gates like Norman Foster’s Stansted. The concourse is designed for Light & Air while the interiors are designed with United Airlines character & Texas flavor. The Concourses ceilings & floors are designed with cues of directional flow and assist in wayfinding.
